凯文·史密斯的生日是1970年08月02日，出生于美国新泽西州。

　　1970年，凯文·史密斯出生于新泽西，凯文一向以新泽西为荣，在他的电影中观众不难发现。23岁时，正当年少气盛的凯文凑齐了25000美元，拉着几个便利店的同事开始拍片。由于凯文的剧本都是根据自己在店里的日常生活编写，所以每个角色都有凯文同事们的影子，因此这帮从没演过戏的家伙演起来也特别传神。这部戏几乎没有外景，全都在便利店完成，为此，凯文他们还特地拜托老板借出场地，老板同意他们在不影响工作的情况下，晚上下班关门后来拍。于是凯文和他的伙伴们每天下班就从家里把器材抬到店里拍戏，因为人手和资金不足，影片的场景只能限定在店内，全片唯一算得上外景的场面就是几个人来到附近的教堂前，嬉闹般的对着教堂门口拍了一两个镜头就又回到店里。

　　史料不及的是，这部用16毫米黑白胶片拍出来的同期录音的小玩意，先是在圣丹斯电影节大获全胜，随后又在戛纳摘得两个奖项。米拉麦克斯公司很快将影片推上大银幕，这部极低成本的《疯狂店员》在96个影院上映后拿下了315万美元的票房。处女作的成功让凯文继续下去，1995年，他的第二部影片《耍酷一族》虽然在影院票房并不成功，但却成为热门录影带，并在他的影迷中受到追捧。在拍摄《耍酷一族》期间，凯文结识了本·阿弗莱克、杰森·李和女友乔伊·劳伦·亚当斯。他能和亚当斯走到一起是因为下部作品《猜·情·寻》，而当影片完成时两人也走到了终点。随着该片赢得独立精神奖的最佳剧本奖和最佳男配角奖，凯文遇到了日后的妻子珍妮佛。

　　凯文之后又拍摄了《怒犯天条》、《白烂贱客》、《泽西女孩》和《疯狂店员2》等影片，同时他还在编剧、制作以及表演领域闯出自己的一片天地。他还开有一家漫画书店、一个制片公司，平时还为杂志撰稿和拍摄短片。
